2-20th May: Face to face (9-13th); Virtual (2-6th & 16-20th)
In partnership event with ACAP on the 9th May (2:00-3:30pm), we’ll be hosting an event called: “Catching the black swan: risk identification and anticipatory analysis for early action”.
Anticipatory analysis and early action are challenging, not only because of the uncertainty related to collecting and analysing data, but also because of the ambiguity inherent in forecasting. Identifying the unexpected events – spotting the black swan – is yet essential for anticipatory analysis to be impactful. This is particularly important considering the new, more severe, and more frequent crises that climate change can bring about.
This panel will explore how anticipatory analysis can serve decision-makers working across the development-humanitarian nexus to take early action.
The Centre’s Sophie Evans will be speaking at this event which will explore proven, innovative, and scalable solutions for building resilience to extreme heat and other challenges and to discover a new appreciation for what it means to be resilient.
The Forum on Global Resilience is an invitation-only event featuring global and local thought leaders, experts, and influencers from a variety of backgrounds, with a particular focus on adaptation to extreme urban heat.

Cities are experiencing extensive and costly damage due to such increasingly severe disasters as hurricanes, floods, droughts, forest fires, among others. How to address them is well-known but many solutions are extremely costly and time consuming. The Centre’s Sophie Evans will join an expert panel to explore how cities can identify and prioritize needed climate-resilient hard and soft infrastructure and related projects in advance of natural disasters as well as understanding what responsibilities upper-level governments have in assisting cities to undertake projects that moderate the effects of natural disasters.
The Centre's Eleanor Hevey will be moderating this discussion about why pre-agreed disaster risk finance should be on the agenda for women's advocates everywhere. Together with the United Nations Capital Development Fund, African Risk Capacity (ARC), InsuResilience Global Partnership, World Food Programme and more, women's needs and priorities must inform this new finance frontier if these instruments are to fulfil their potential and work for everyone.
