In a new three-part series, hosted by Jeevan Vasagar, experts from the Centre for Disaster Protection discuss the state of pre-arranged financing for disasters, how we can prevent climate-related disasters from devastating the lives of the most vulnerable, and how to be ready for the next pandemic.

Counter Crisis – a three-part series looking into the state of disaster risk financing – is launching next week, with episode one going live on Wednesday, March 20 2024.

Episode one features our Associate Director, Evidence, Lydia Poole, along with guest Ekhosuehi Iyahen, Secretary General of the Insurance Development Forum, shedding light on the blind spots of our current approaches to disasters, and how pre-arranged financing can help the most vulnerable people in the long term.

Episode two of the series will air on Wednesday, March 27. Drawing lessons from the experiences of small island states, we explore how to break the cycle of treating climate disasters as surprises. The Centre’s Research Lead, Shakira Mustapha, will be joined by Michai Robertson, a Research Fellow in climate and Sustainability at the global affairs think tank ODI.

The series will conclude with episode three on Wednesday, April 3, discussing the differences and similarities between epidemic and climate change risks, what we have learnt from the covid-19 pandemic, and whether the fragmented international system is ready for ‘Disease X’. Joining the square, are our Lead Risk Finance Advisor, Cristina Stefan and Ruchir Agarwal, a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and a non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development.

You can find the series on all the major podcast platforms. By subscribing, you will be notified when a new episode goes live.

From next Wednesday, March 20, search for Counter Crisis on your favourite podcast platform to listen to episode one.

We will also publish the podcasts on the Centre’s insights page and in our newsletter, The Dispatch. The series was produced by Tortoise Media.
