Jonathon Gascoigne

Lead Risk Finance Advisor

It is with deep sadness that the Centre for Disaster Protection mourns the loss of our dear colleague, Jonathon (Jon) , who died in June 2023. Read our post in Jon's memory, here.

Jonathon has over 15 years’ experience in risk assessment for the re/insurance industry, designing and delivering innovative products for catastrophic loss profiling and risk transfer. This work has included providing a wide range of advice around disaster risk finance (DRF), climate risk analytics, ‘own view of risk’ validation and risk communication. Jonathon has led engagement with academic institutions and research councils.

Previous roles in a diverse career of evidence-based advocacy across governmental, NGO and university start-ups have covered applications in pollution, water and energy services, retail, health, policing, legal services, media, agriculture, biodiversity and strategic planning.

Within the Centre Jonathon leads on developing climate risk policy, and is responsible for managing and supporting a wide range of research, evaluation and advisory projects, including training.

Jonathon gained degrees from the University of Lancaster (BSc Hons) in Geography (including economics and development studies) and the University of Leeds (MA, distinction) in Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Modelling. Jonathon is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
